What does it mean to speak to an advocate?

  • Who are ASAP advocates?
    • ASAP Advocates are UNC students who undergo a mandatory 40-hour training program on sexual violence, intimate partner violence, stalking, and advocacy.                                                                                                                                                                         
  • Where and when can I speak with an advocate?
    • To speak with an advocate, you can come by our office located in Cassidy Hall (1901 10th Ave) on the 2nd floor during our business hours from 9 a.m – 5 p.m Monday – Friday. If you don’t feel comfortable coming in, but still want to speak to an advocate feel free to call our business line, 970-351-1490. You can also email ASAP at advocacy@9858k.com
    • Advocate are available 24/7 and can be reached on our hotline, 970-351-4040.                                                                                                                                                                           
  • Why would someone want to speak with an advocate?
    • We can assist survivors in navigating systems such as reporting to law enforcement or the University.  We also offer resources & options, help ensure survivors' rights, and assist survivors in creating individualized safety plans.  Our empowerment-based advocacy is survivor-centered, trauma-informed, and confidential.

ASAP Services 

ASAP has a variety of services and advocates work with survivors to explore options and meet their needs, whatever they may be. The main services that ASAP offers are:

Academic Intervention

We assist students by sending academic intervention letters to identified faculty or staff. The aim of these letters is to open communication so students can ask for what they need to continue to be successful in their classes.

Exploring Reporting Options

We assist survivors in understanding their reporting options, explore their goals with reporting, and  discuss processes and procedures of the different reporting options.

Safety Planning

Safety is often a concern for survivors of gender-based violence. We brainstorm strategies with survivors and set up protocols to help keep them safe.

Connecting to Resources

We help survivors get connected with on-campus and community resources that can support them in their journey towards healing.
